Mrs. S, I can totally relate to what you went through! My buddy and I went a little crazy when we bought a mattress for baby Caroline (celebrating her sixth month b-day in a week!), because we're first-timers. It seemed like everyone from my mother-in-law to my neighbor who I only talk to once a year was offering me advice on mattresses, and some of them even wanted to give us secondhand mattresses. My husband was all for it, given how uncertain the economy is at this moment, but I was really scared about chemicals and allergens that can not only irritate Baby's sensitive skin, but contribute to SIDS as well. He told me I was just being a nervous first time mommy, but I knew that older mattresses were absolutely loaded with dangerous stuff. In true male fashion, I think he just didn't want to say no to his mother!

So I did a little research to help persuade him otherwise. I came across this article and the Crib Mattress Guide , which is a really great guide to help you find a crib mattress for babies. It details everything right down to showing up at the nursery store with crib measurements, which I would have never thought of before stumbling across this great resource.

Needless to say, once I showed my hubby all of this information, he definitely changed his mind about secondhand mattresses vs. new mattresses. And believe me, baby Caroline sleeps soundly through the night, even though she's been developing allergies. I just know that a secondhand mattress just would have made her more cranky and irritate. I highly recommend that all new mommies should check out Crib Mattress Guide !
